South Range public works readies for winter; fire department pursues grants and adds member

Village of South Range public-works and fire department leaders reported operational updates at the Dec. 4 council meeting.
Street Commissioner Craig Burkman told the council snow removal was proceeding smoothly for winter: snow had been pushed to road sides and sidewalks to create more space, the sand spreader (sander) had been repaired and was operating efficiently, and lagoon discharge had been completed. Burkman also said public works had identified a water leak on Second Street that will be addressed.
Chief Balma reported the fire department had no calls in November, that one firefighter stepped down and one new member recently joined and currently has Firefighter I training. The department completed a food license for the village Christmas event, will decorate for the celebration on Dec. 6 and plans to purchase a new television for training and dispatch. Chief Balma said the department is pursuing new grants related to building a new fire hall.
