St. James Township schedules Truth-in-Taxation hearing as board approves 2.7% raise and affiliate budgets

The board also approved FY2026–2027 budgets for the Beaver Island Transfer Station and Recycling Center, Beaver Island emergency medical services and the Beaver Island Fire Department.
Supervisor Welke called the meeting to order at 5:30 p.m. and the board voted unanimously on the personnel and budget actions, with motions made by board member Cole and supported by board member Gillespie (roll-call: Cole Y, Gillespie Y, Welke Y). The cost-of-living increase applies to full‑time employees assigned to St. James Township and those assigned to the listed affiliate services.
The agenda noted a millage request from the Beaver Island Rural Health Center seeking an increase from 2.0000 to 2.5000 mills to offset rising operational costs. The board said discussion of that request and a previously discussed request for BIHS will occur at the Truth‑in‑Taxation meeting on March 30, 2026; no final millage decisions were made at the March 25 meeting.
Board members approved the FY2026–2027 budgets for the mentioned affiliates in a single motion. The motions and roll-call results were recorded in the meeting minutes and submitted by Deputy Clerk Suzanne Boyle.
The Truth‑in‑Taxation hearing on March 30 will provide the public a formal opportunity to comment on proposed millage changes and related budget items before final township action.
