Sparta council approves $552,791.12 in payables; manager updates Safe Routes, Nash Creek, airport

The Village of Sparta on July 8 approved June payables totaling $552,791.12 and received routine department reports.
Clerk-reported payables showed major items including General Fund $132,546.34 and Major Street Fund $260,246.91, with airport and utility funds also represented. The informational total for other funds (Fire Department, SRA Park Fund, DDA) was $25,942.68. Council Member Courtney Mais moved and Bill Taylor seconded approval of the payables; the vote was unanimous.
Village Manager Jim Lower said he will be on vacation next week and named Airport Manager Mike Kryciok as the emergency contact. Lower updated the council on the Safe Routes project, stating that all easements have been secured and the necessary paperwork for grants has been submitted. He said Nash Creek dredging is scheduled for 2025 and gave a progress update on the Rogers Park splash pad.
Airport Manager Mike Kryciok told the council that fuel sales are currently high but that 2020 saw the highest sales on record; he also noted that flight schools at the airport are very busy, which contributes to fuel demand.
During general public comment, Eva Wickham of 114 S. Union raised concerns about a landlord allowing a property to become derelict; the council did not take formal action during the meeting on that complaint. Council Member Courtney Mais announced she will be out of the country in July. President Robert Whalen adjourned the meeting at 7:53 p.m.
