School committee approves several policies, adopts remote learning plan and adjusts calendar

On policies, the committee moved to adopt multiple policies as written, including homebound instruction (IBF), homeschooling/alternative school programs (IBH/IHG-related), summer school and instructional materials policies, and library material selection and adoption policies. The committee said most edits were minor and were made to align the district index with MASC guidance; one sentence in the homeschooling policy was removed because it did not reflect MASC policy.
The committee also moved to rescind IHBG-R (a duplicate homeschooling regulation) because its elements were incorporated into the district's homeschooling policy and it had been removed from the MASC index as a standalone regulation.
The committee discussed and adopted a new remote learning policy that defines the superintendent's role in declaring an emergency, requires School Committee approval for implementing remote learning in extraordinary circumstances (disease outbreaks, weather events, or other emergencies), and emphasizes continuity of instruction, technology support, safety and equity. Members noted any emergency action would still need to comply with open meeting law and public-notice requirements.
The committee held updates to the district's non-discrimination policies for another month pending revised guidance from MASC.
