Springport council approves pay and utility upgrades, denies police-parking signs

The Village of Springport council voted Aug. 6 to approve council compensation and employee pay recommendations and authorized electrical work at two well houses, while denying a request for police-parking signs in front of the Springport Township Hall.
Council members approved a motion to adopt the minutes of the July 11, 2024 meeting before taking up new business. On council compensation, a motion by Barnette, seconded by Austin Ward, "to approve council compensation as recommended by Manager Saylors" passed with ayes from Barnette, Austin Ward, Cara Ward and President Gordon Webb; Bartley and Severns were recorded as absent. The council later approved employee compensation in a motion by Cara Ward, seconded by Barnette; that motion also carried unanimously among those present.
The council considered a motion by Barnette, seconded by Austin Ward, to place two "Police Parking Only" signs on Mechanic Street in front of the Springport Township Hall. The roll call showed no ayes and four nays (Barnette, Austin Ward, Cara Ward and Webb), and the motion was denied.
On capital work for the village water system, the council approved a motion by Cara Ward, seconded by Barnette, to accept Hickey Electric's quote for electrical upgrades in the well houses in an amount not to exceed $6,500. The motion carried with unanimous votes from those present.
Meetings and procedural items were handled in standard order; the meeting adjourned at 8:45 p.m.
