South Range schedules public hearing on 0.7542-mill tax increase; council approves stipends and routine motions

The Village of South Range Council on June 4 scheduled a public hearing on a proposed 0.7542 mill increase to the village operating tax levy and approved a set of routine motions including firefighter stipends and payment of bills.
Trustee Marier moved and Trustee Balma seconded a motion to hold the millage hearing on Thursday, June 18, 2026, at 6:00 p.m. at the South Range Community Hall. The council recorded that if the proposed additional millage is adopted it would increase operating revenues by 5.49 percent, and if not approved operating revenue would decrease by 2.64 percent. The motion carried with aye votes from President Eakin, Trustee Hill, Trustee Harkonen and Trustee Parolini.
The council approved firefighter stipends for 2026 after a motion by Trustee Harkonen and second by Trustee Parolini. The stipend approved was $599.00 for active firefighters, $740.00 for the fire chief, and $100.00 for retired firefighters; the motion passed with President Eakin, Trustee Hill and Trustee Marier voting aye and Trustee Balma recording an abstention.
Other actions taken included approval of the May 7, 2026 regular meeting minutes (motion by Trustee Marier; roll call showed ayes from President Eakin, Trustee Hill and Trustee Parolini, with Trustee Harkonen abstaining), acceptance of a zoning compliance application conditioned on a 6-foot setback (motion carried), and approval of bills totaling $83,054.39. Trustee Harkonen moved approval of the bills, seconded by Trustee Balma; roll call recorded ayes from Trustee Marier, Trustee Parolini and Trustee Hill.
Deputy Clerk Dorsey reported the Consumer Confidence Report had been published in the Daily Mining Gazette and distributed to EGLE and the Health Department; she also said nine new traffic signs were on order and a 4th of July parade permit was pending. President Eakin said he had begun enforcement of ordinance violations by obtaining pictures and mailing notices to residents in violation.
The council deferred a decision on the treasurer’s wages to the July 2026 meeting. With no further business the council adjourned at 8:00 p.m.
The next scheduled public step on the millage question is the June 18 hearing at 6:00 p.m. at South Range Community Hall.
