St. Clair County seeks $5 million BUILD grant for SR-411; several road projects advanced

St. Clair County commissioners received updates on transportation projects and approved steps to advance preliminary engineering and site studies on Feb. 10.
Staff reported that Kurr Road contractors are expected to mobilize soon to install turn lanes at the intersection with Highway 411. County staff also described ongoing hot-mix paving and base work in the Pine Mountain area and pipe repairs near Camp Creek and Center Star.
The commission discussed Alabama Power’s utility work on Sy Road and congestion at the Argo/Margaret Road intersection. Staff recommended engaging a consultant to study shifting the intersection slightly west to align with another street and to accommodate power-pole placement; commissioners approved proceeding with consultant services.
Separately, staff outlined a BUILD grant application seeking roughly $5 million for preliminary engineering and environmental work for SR-411 from Park Avenue to Sy Road, to be divided into five phases. Staff said the county would provide a 10% local match split across the county and reported productive meetings with the congressional delegation in Washington about the request.
The commission approved related procurement and study authorizations by voice votes and instructed staff to continue coordinating required local match and grant materials.
