Legislature earmarks $800,000 for S-Bridge Truss; council hears timeline and responsibilities

Mayor Pro Tem Ashley Hodges reported Jan. 24 that the state legislature has earmarked $800,000 for work on the S-Bridge Truss, including mobilization and demobilization, installing support bents, moving the truss (launched from Missing Mill Park), and full encapsulation repainting with lead abatement. Hodges said DOT staff expect the department's board to approve the allocation at its February meeting and that funds should be available by mid-to-late February.
Hodges outlined implementation details discussed with county and DOT staff: McClain Company, already on site for related work, will be used for the truss move; work will be performed from barges (DOT will cover barge rent); pile driving is subject to a February–June moratorium for pilings; and once the truss is moved and work completed, ownership will be conveyed to the Town of Hertford, which will thereafter be responsible for upkeep such as repainting every 25–30 years. Hodges said DOT could provide periodic inspections for about $5,000.
Hodges also summarized the Coastal Resiliency Open House held Jan. 18, noting consultants discussed options including burying overhead power lines; those programs and funding sources are to be researched further. The council did not take formal action on the truss update at this meeting.
