Hertford council authorizes fire-department grant application, updates appointments and finance officer

The Council of the Town of Hertford on Jan. 24 unanimously authorized the Hertford Fire Department to apply for the department's annual 50/50 equipment grant and approved a series of administrative appointments.
Hertford Fire Chief Drew Woodard asked permission to apply for the grant to replace aging rescue airbags that the department can no longer obtain parts for; he said the airbags cost about $8,000 each and that the town's share if awarded would be $30,000, with payment due in the 2022–23 budget year. Councilman Jerry Mimlitsch moved to authorize the application; the motion passed 4-0.
The council also filled a vacancy on the ElectricCities (NCEMPA) Board created by the retirement of Pamela Hurdle. By voice vote, the council designated Mayor Earnell Brown as the Commissioner, Interim Manager Janice McKenzie Cole as first alternate and Mayor Pro Tem Ashley Hodges as second alternate.
Separately, the council removed Niaisha Stokely as Finance Officer and signatory and appointed Mayor Pro Tem Ashley Hodges as the Town Finance Officer to serve without compensation. That motion, moved by Councilwoman Sandra Anderson and seconded by Councilwoman Connie Brothers, passed 4-0.
Manager Cole also briefed the council on the EMS Annual Officials Conference scheduled for March 7, 2022, and described a new unified procedure for event notification and approval through a form on the County EMS webpage; she asked that the town place a link to the form on its website.
Council members used the meeting to report community events including Historic Hertford Inc. programming, a museum opening and building dedications scheduled for late January and spring events.
