The Waterford Board of Finance voted to appropriate $50,000 from the capital non‑recurring undesignated fund to establish a multi‑phase Vauxhall Street project and to forward the request to the Representative Town Meeting for final authorization.
Public works staff described the initial project limits as beginning at Huntsbrook Road and extending to the power-line corridor; board members who inspected the road noted more distressed sections north of the Montville line. Discussion covered anticipated scope — modest widening, improved drainage, potential shoulders or bike lanes — and noted that adding bike lanes can increase grant competitiveness. Staff said the $50,000 is “seed” money for engineering and design work and emphasized that larger construction funds would be pursued through state and federal grants, economic development and emergency-management grant programs, and coordination with regional partners.
Members raised the need to engage Montville on the border intersection and to align the project with the town’s resurfacing program; the first selectman and others stressed earlier conversations with state economic development and emergency-management offices to seek grant funding. The director of public works said the appropriation will allow engineers to develop a plan and rough estimate that can support grant applications.
The motion passed on a voice vote. The appropriation will be forwarded to the RTM for approval and to permit engineering and grant-seeking work to begin.
