Standish council approves assessor contract, tree removal, MDOT resolution and furnace repairs; holds budget first reading

At its March 10 meeting the Standish City Council unanimously approved a one-year assessor contract with SunRise Assessing, accepted a $2,025 quote for a Grove Street tree removal, adopted MDOT Performance Resolution 25.01, accepted McBride's $13,900 bid to repair three water treatment plant furnaces and held a first reading of the 2025–26 budget.
The Standish City Council on March 10 approved several routine administrative actions and heard a first reading of the fiscal 2025–26 budget.
Assessor contract: Council accepted SunRise Assessing LLC's proposed contract for May 1, 2025 to May 1, 2026. Brandon Murphy, who has served as the city assessor for the past year, will continue under the contract rate increase from $19,500 to $20,100. The motion to accept the contract passed unanimously on roll call.
Tree removal: Council accepted a single bid from Uprooted Tree Services to remove a tree on Grove Street for $2,025; the price does not include stump removal. The motion passed unanimously.
Resolution 25.01: Council approved the MDOT Performance Resolution 25.01, which the council noted MDOT requires to allow city employees to work on MDOT roadways.
Furnaces at Water Treatment Plant: Staff reported three of five overhead furnaces at the water treatment plant were not working. Three bids were received; council accepted McBride’s bid of $13,900 (same brand as current units) to repair all three furnaces. The motion carried on a unanimous roll-call vote.
Budget first reading: Council heard the first reading of the 2025–26 budget. Staff reported property tax and road funding increases, that the Dobson Drain is a new budgeted expense, and that the sewer fund has been struggling—rate studies are underway and sewer rate increases may be required. Major Street funds are healthy though some repairs are needed; Local Street funds are depleted from prior projects. Staff said the water fund is healthy and expected to grow with ongoing projects.
Other business: Council tabled a special use permit request from Arenac County for parcel 040-2-300-000-170-15 pending drainage plans; staff listed proposed tribal grant items and estimated costs (surge protector $9,700; breaker $10,000; small generator $3,500; leaf machine $100,000). Council adjourned at 7:55 p.m.
