Aurelia council approves developer agreement for 409 Myrtle St., adopts hazard plan and funds downtown lighting

The Aurelia City Council on May 18 approved a real estate purchase and developer’s agreements for 409 Myrtle St., adopted the 2026 Regional Hazard Mitigation Plan and approved several payments and contracts, including a $2,000 payment to complete the downtown lighting project.
Mayor Roman Redig called the meeting to order at 6:30 p.m. Council Members Nelson, Johnson, Fassler, Bruce and Bleil were present; Steph McSparran, city clerk, and others were also in attendance. The consent agenda, covering minutes, clerk and treasurer reports and bills payable, was approved on a roll-call vote.
Diane Weathers, representing Aurelia Economic Development, described the downtown lighting project and the council approved a motion by Council Member Johnson, seconded by Council Member Bruce, to pay Siouxland Trim Light $2,000 to finish the installation. The council voted unanimously on the payment.
The council approved a number of routine payments and requests. Council Member Bruce moved, and Council Member Fassler seconded, approval of Haselhoff pay application #9 in the amount of $43,472.06; the motion passed unanimously. The council also approved SRF Planning and Disbursement Request #2 for $86,332.41 by the same motion pattern and vote.
Other approvals included a tobacco permit for Casey’s (motion by Council Member Fassler, seconded by Johnson), a Triple C Pest Control contract for the 2026 season (motion by Council Member Bleil, seconded by Bruce), and PTO pool day passes (motion by Council Member Nelson); each motion passed with all members voting 'aye'. An agenda item on IRS mileage was tabled.
Council Member Nelson moved to approve the real estate purchase and developer’s agreements for 409 Myrtle St.; Council Member Bruce seconded and the motion carried with all members voting 'aye'. During the discussion the council set the price of outside water meters at $150, citing rising parts costs.
The council adopted Resolution 26-03, 'A Resolution Disposing of an Interest in Real Estate Owned by the City of Aurelia, Iowa,' on a motion by Council Member Nelson and second by Council Member Johnson. The council also approved Resolution 26-02, adopting the 2026 Regional Hazard Mitigation Plan for the City of Aurelia, on a motion by Council Member Bruce and second by Council Member Fassler; both resolutions passed unanimously.
With no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 7:17 p.m.
