Stanton commission refers Planning Commission ordinance amendment to city attorney, approves audit engagement and routine business

At its Jan. 13 meeting, the Stanton City Commission voted to refer an amendment to the Planning Commission ordinance to the city attorney, approved a single-audit engagement letter and handled routine approvals of minutes and accounts payable. The Stanton City Commission voted Jan. 13 to send a proposed amendment to the Planning Commission ordinance to the city attorney and approved a Single Audit engagement letter with Berthiaume & Company, while completing routine agenda business.
Commissioner Ray Holloway moved to send an amendment to the city attorney to add a section to the Planning Commission ordinance clarifying that, when the City Commission is sitting as the Zoning Board of Appeals, Article 2 Division 3 section 2.71(c) of the Planning Commission Ordinance does not apply. The motion was seconded by an unidentified commissioner and carried on a voice vote.
The ordinance referral is intended to produce a draft amendment for legal review; the minutes record the commission’s direction to consult the city attorney but do not include text of the proposed amendment or a final ordinance vote.
In other business, Commissioner Tamara Kuhn moved to approve a Single Audit Engagement Letter with Berthiaume & Company; Commissioner Jane Basom seconded and the motion carried on a voice vote. The commission also approved the Dec. 23, 2025 meeting minutes and the accounts payable report through Jan. 9, 2026 by voice votes on motions moved and seconded by commissioners as recorded in the minutes.
During public comment, Frank Lafata of Greenville identified himself as a candidate for state representative and said he was visiting local communities. The commission discussed plans for a Fourth of July parade in downtown Stanton but made no formal decision at the meeting.
Commissioner Chuck Miel told the commission that first impressions entering the south side of the city have improved. Mayor Bill Ferguson reported that the Planning Commission is focusing on sidewalks and raised several administrative items, including a potential sound system in light poles, posting open positions and updates to policies and procedures.
The meeting opened at 6:30 p.m. and adjourned at 7:10 p.m. Clerk Sarah Johnson signed the minutes.
