Police chief: new hire unresponsive; borough to pursue part‑time officer

Police Chief David Pernice told the Union City Borough Council on Aug. 27 that he has attempted to contact a recently approved candidate for hire but has had no success and is assuming the person is no longer interested.
Pernice said there are 32 candidates remaining on the consortium list and that he would contact the consortium and set up oral exams with the Civil Service Commission. He said his preference would be to hire two part‑time officers, although only one position was approved by council; council agreed to continue searching for one part‑time officer.
No formal motion was recorded to change the approved staffing level; Pernice said he would send out letters and pursue oral exams. The council did not record a candidate name or an exam date during the meeting.
