Union City to pursue Broadband Ready Communities designation with Erie Area COG support

Union City Borough Council voted on July 9 to move forward with a resolution and the public meeting process to pursue the Broadband Ready Communities designation, authorizing the Erie Area Council of Governments (EACOG) to act as the borough's Municipal Broadband Champion.
Borough staff told council the designation process creates an opportunity for additional internet service providers to enter the borough and noted the borough's permitting requirements are within the program recommendations. Councilor Kerns moved and Councilor Joyce seconded a motion to proceed with the public meeting and resolution; the motion carried unanimously.
The resolution authorizes EACOG to complete the application on the borough's behalf; staff will schedule the required public meeting as part of the process. Council members said the effort is intended to expand broadband options for residents by lowering procedural barriers for providers to evaluate and deploy infrastructure.
