Union City Borough Council on July 9 approved emergency repairs to a failing stormwater line after a large sinkhole formed behind 98 East High Street and authorized immediate inspection of a separate sinkhole in a municipal parking lot.
Streets Supervisor Bob Phillips reported that a camera inspection found about 50 feet of intact cement pipe followed by roughly 90–100 feet of corroded galvanized pipe; the camera fell into the failed section. Phillips said a sinkhole about 3 feet wide by 8 feet deep appeared in the backyard of 98 East High. Contractor Mansfield quoted $14,500 to replace the galvanized section with plastic pipe. Councilor Steadman moved and Councilor Kerns seconded a motion to have Mansfield perform the replacement; the motion carried unanimously.
Council also authorized Mansfield to cut concrete and open a hole in Municipal Lot #1 to determine the cause of another sinkhole, with spending capped at $6,000 after soliciting a price and availability from McLallen Construction. That motion also carried unanimously.
The council directed staff to pursue the repairs promptly. The meetings minutes record that the borough will contact alternative contractors for price/availability on the Municipal Lot #1 work before Mansfield proceeds. The items will be implemented through the borough's public works process and funded from the borough's maintenance or emergency repair allocations.
Next steps: the replacement at 98 East High is authorized for immediate scheduling with Mansfield; the Municipal Lot #1 opening will proceed once the borough confirms the alternate contractor price or availability as required by the approved motion.
