Brookfield Inland Wetlands Commission roundup: approvals, continuances and enforcement updates

The Brookfield Inland Wetlands Commission on June 22 approved several routine permits, continued two larger items for additional review and heard enforcement updates from staff.
Approvals and continuances: The commission approved application W-26-30 for 90 South Lakeshore Drive (demo and garage reconstruction) with the usual stipulations after the applicant submitted revised plans and a detention/recharge approach for stormwater mitigation. Chair Sharon Cox moved the approval and commissioners voted unanimously. The commission continued W-26-17 (40 Arrowhead demo/renovation) and W-26-3411 (Diana Drive / Ericoy pipeline maintenance) to the next regularly scheduled meeting to allow applicants to provide additional materials and scheduling; the Diana Drive item included a commission recommendation that the applicant hire a Connecticut wetland soil scientist to document pre- and post-work photos and a short remediation report and to fund a third-party desk review of that report within 30 days of project completion.
Enforcement and inspections: Laura Barowski, the town’s inland wetlands enforcement officer, briefed the commission on several enforcement cases including 100 Candlewood Lake Road, 58 Old Gracebridge Road and properties on Pocono and Deerfield Roads. For several properties staff reminded owners that the violation remains active until Laura can confirm compliance; commissioners clarified that one or two stumps in the upland review area typically will not require an application but three or more stumps found by staff will.
Habitat and field work: Commissioners reported field visits to 7 Toby Lane and Otus Hill Road. A biologist confirmed a planned one-foot lowering of a beaver pond at 7 Toby Lane should preserve the lodge; on Otus Hill Road a pipe installed on the dam will allow water level recovery of roughly one foot. Commissioners thanked the Northwest Conservation District and the Brookfield Conservation Commission for volunteer labor and requested that minutes be shared with those groups.
Minutes and housekeeping: The commission approved the June 8, 2026 minutes with two typographical corrections and discussed drafting a joint letter with Conservation and Parks & Recreation to the Department of Energy & Environmental Protection concerning riparian buffer conditions on the Still River near Greenland.
The meeting adjourned after commissioners moved and seconded to close the session.
