Committee narrows process for minor curriculum changes and tables challenging curriculum review

The Bristol School District policy committee discussed proposed changes to curriculum policies, including a draft revision to Policy 6140 that would let the student achievement committee approve minor curricular revisions and report them annually, while reserving major changes for full-board review.

Presenters explained the proposed text would treat minor edits — adjustments to standards, learning targets, common learning experiences and assessments — as part of ongoing instructional development. Those minor revisions would be recorded by the curriculum supervisor and presented annually to the student achievement committee, which could either approve them at the committee level or refer them to the full board. Major revisions, such as adding a new course, adopting new Connecticut or national standards, or changing more than half of a course’s content, would continue to require full-board review.

Committee members asked whether the annual reporting requirement might preclude mid-year or urgent changes. The director of curriculum and the presenter clarified that unexpected or substantial changes could be brought forward outside the annual report and that any commissioner may request review of a curriculum at any time. One committee member recommended explicitly requiring that statutorily mandated curriculum changes go to the full board so the public is notified; presenters agreed that would be a sensible clarification.

Separately, the committee examined Policy 6141 (challenging curriculum). A member expressed concern that language in the CABE model policy — which lists characteristics of students likely to succeed in advanced coursework — could be more restrictive than the district’s previous policy. The member proposed replacing some CABE phrasing with the district’s prior language and using multiple methods (teacher recommendations, counselor input, parent/guardian input and other indicators) to determine eligibility rather than relying on a narrow profile.

After discussion, the committee amended and approved a motion to table the challenging curriculum item and the related gifted & talented policy and bring both to the next policy meeting for a coordinated review and alignment.

Next steps: committee members will receive redlined drafts for further review before the next policy meeting; the two curriculum-related items will be prioritized for joint consideration.
