Newton City committee approves moving two precinct polling sites to renovated senior center

Newton City committee members voted to approve agenda item 213-26 to relocate the polling locations for precincts 2 and 3 from Cabbat School back to the Cooper Center for Active Living, the city’s newly renovated senior center.
Jill Sepa, the city’s new deputy clerk (also serving as interim council clerk and interim city clerk), told the committee the senior center had been the original polling site before it was temporarily moved when the center was under construction. "The pleasure of the clerk is to, and hopefully of the council is to, restore that location back to the newly renovated senior center, which is ADA compliant and an ideal situation," Sepa said. She also reported that the election commission met at 5:00 p.m. and "voted to endorse" the recommended move.
Committee members asked how voters would be informed of the change. A staff member said there will be signage at both the old and new locations and that the clerk’s office plans to send a mailer to all registered voters in the two precincts to notify them of the change. "There's certainly informing the voters is definitely an important piece to this," Sepa added.
A committee member moved approval of item 213-26; the meeting record states, "President Oliver has moved approval of 213-26." The chair called for a voice vote; members responded in the affirmative and the motion carried by voice vote. The transcript does not record a roll-call tally.
After the vote, members thanked Sepa for presenting and discussed other items for future agendas, including follow-up on tree issues, enforcement of a landscape leaf-blower ordinance, and consideration of a school-committee charter article. The committee tentatively scheduled a single July meeting on July 15 and said it typically does not meet in August unless necessary.
Next steps for the polling-site change are the clerk’s planned mailer to registered voters in precincts 2 and 3 and on-site wayfinding signage for the first use of the restored senior-center location. The committee took no further formal action at the meeting and adjourned.
