Food services: Healthy Food Certification planned; Chartwells contract enters final year

Tanja Gouveia, staff member for Newtown School District, briefed the subcommittee on the Healthy Food Certification process and the National School Lunch Program.
Gouveia said the full Board will be required to approve two motions at its May meeting: confirmation that the district complies with Connecticut Nutrition Standards and approval to permit the sale of non-compliant foods and beverages to students only outside the regular school day or on weekends. She noted approved meeting minutes and the motions themselves must be submitted to the State before the end of June to complete certification.
On contract matters, Gouveia said the 2026'27 school year will be the final year of the current Chartwells contract and that the fourth renewal with the State is due by the end of June. She reported the Consumer Price Index rate for 2026'27 is 3.9%, the maximum allowable increase for administrative and management fees that represent Chartwells' revenue under the contract; Chartwells does not profit directly from food sales under the arrangement described to the committee. A meeting with Chartwells will be scheduled to finalize renewal details.
Committee members heard the update and were informed of upcoming Board actions required to complete Healthy Food Certification for the district.
