During the Aug. 26 meeting of the New London Board of Education Finance & Audit Committee, Chief Financial Officer Rob Funk reported that the State had informed the district late that it had issued an incorrect award and indicated it wanted to reclaim funds. Funk raised the issue while reviewing proposed line-item transfers.
Committee Chair Elaine Maynard-Adams said she has spoken with legislators who support keeping the award and the grant received. Maynard-Adams said the State Department of Education should determine where to find the money or pursue a legislative appropriation rather than automatically recouping the award from the district. The committee did not receive testimony from state officials during the meeting.
The committee moved to approve the line item transfers (motion by Susan Hambey, seconded by Alisha Blake). The motion carried, 3-0. The committee recorded the discussion and approved the transfers; no further committee action on the state’s stated intent to recoup funds was recorded at the meeting.
