Committee members question district payments for nurses at private and parochial schools

Community Representative Scott Garbini asked whether the district has full-time nurses on staff and expressed frustration that the district still pays for nurses at some tuition-based schools, saying such schools should increase tuition to cover those costs. Ms. Rivera, Executive Director of Student and Family Supports, confirmed the district has hired nurses and now has a full-time nurse for each building, with some buildings supported by health aides. She also explained the district continues to pay for nursing coverage at The Williams School and St. Joseph'9s School.
Committee Member Elaine Maynard-Adams responded that most students at St. Joseph'9s are New London residents and noted the city receives a state reimbursement for nonpublic expenses; she said a recent audit reflected the city received approximately $70,000. Ms. Maynard-Adams contrasted that with The Williams School, which she said has 13 students from New London and a tuition of approximately $40,000, and expressed less concern about funding nursing for St. Joseph'9s because of the student composition.
