Public safety committee approves purchase of four replacement vehicles for Akron Fire Department

Two Akron Fire Department chiefs said the department seeks approval for four replacement vehicles — Equinoxes — to replace units retired as unsafe and to support fire prevention, EMS and training teams. The chiefs said the vehicles are available through SourceWell/state bid pricing and are serviced by the department’s maintenance facility on Triplet Avenue.
“The three that were retired this year were deemed unsafe by our fire maintenance facility,” a chief told the committee, adding that additional vehicles will need replacement in early 2027. Staff said they reached out to Akron dealers but could not match state contract pricing.
Committee members asked about servicing and procurement; staff confirmed servicing is done at the city’s facility and that state bid pricing provided competitive value. The committee placed the ordinance on the consent agenda and approved it by voice vote.
