Policy committee to resend student-device survey after low staff response

The New London Board of Education Policy Committee discussed Policy 5131.81, governing students’ use of private technology devices, at its Oct. 8 meeting.
Kristea A. Francolino, Manager of Executive Support Services, reviewed charts from a staff survey and shared written staff comments. Committee Member Elaine Maynard-Adams said she was concerned that only about one-third of instructional staff had responded and suggested re-sending the survey with additional prompting to improve response rates.
Dr. Ritchie said the survey had been distributed previously via all-staff email and the Monday Memo but agreed to re-send it to seek a larger sample. Betsy Perkins said comments she read indicated a desire for consistency across schools and classrooms; Chair Nathan Caron noted implementation fidelity was a common theme and observed that earbuds were referenced in staff comments but are not currently included in the policy. The committee asked that future survey rounds collect more specific information about respondents’ schools and grade levels to help analysis.
No vote was taken on Policy 5131.81 during the meeting; the committee discussed next steps for gathering clearer staff input.
