Board of Finance says library remains operationally sound after confusing media report

Members of the Board of Finance on Sept. 23 responded to a recent newspaper letter that, they said, made the library’s finances appear worse than they are. A board member who attended the library’s board meeting told colleagues the article was misleading, saying the library has sustained fundraising efforts, rising program participation and stable operations.

First Selectwoman Peggy said the library will appear before the Board of Selectmen at their Monday meeting to walk through the reporting and clarify misunderstandings. "I encourage all of you to attend that meeting because I think it might help clarify and allow them to really walk through where there was some kind of miscommunications," Peggy said.

Board members noted that some communications labeled as a first-quarter letter looked more like a fourth-quarter report, and that reporting on program-specific metrics (for example, summer camp sign-ups) does not always reflect overall operational revenues or obligations. Several members recalled that when the library has come up short in prior years, the town has sometimes supplemented operations or asked the library to adjust expenses.

The board also received an update on the new elementary school project; members said construction is progressing, walls are up and the project remains on budget and moving toward bidding.

The meeting did not include a vote to change funding for the library; instead, members scheduled follow-up conversation at the Selectmen’s meeting to hear the library’s accounting and answer questions.

The Board of Finance adjourned the library discussion by encouraging direct engagement between the library and the Selectmen so officials and the public can review the details together.
