Fairfield Fire Marshal Steven Kiy issued a brief summer safety advisory, urging residents to take simple precautions to reduce fire and drowning risks as the season begins. He highlighted specific steps for grilling, camping and water safety and pointed people to the city’s preparedness resources.
Kiy told listeners to “always keep your grill outside and at least 10 to 20 feet away from your home, deck railings or any overhanging branches,” and to establish a three-foot kid-and-pet zone around the cooking area. He said the “number one safety tool” is a reliable fire extinguisher and urged homeowners to have extinguishers checked annually so they will be ready if needed.
On charcoal use, Kiy advised giving briquettes plenty of time to cool, placing them in a metal container and dousing them with water to ensure they are fully extinguished before disposal. He also reminded residents that open fire pits are not permitted in town; when camping off‑site, he said campers should clear surrounding vegetation, keep an adult supervising any fire, and keep an extinguisher or water bucket nearby.
On water safety, Kiy emphasized never leaving anyone unattended in or near the water, using the buddy system, equipping nonswimmers with proper life jackets and considering swim lessons to build skills. He also urged people to “know your zone,” explaining that local authorities use zone maps and alerts for wildfire messaging and preparedness.
Kiy closed by directing listeners to the city’s preparedness page (fairfield.ca.gov/prepare) for additional resources, and on behalf of the Fairfield Fire Department wished residents a safe and enjoyable summer.
