The chair moved to raise the available grant amount and a committee member seconded; the motion passed by voice vote. Commissioner Miguel introduced the grant update and said the board had recommended the increase at a prior special meeting.
Kate, the commission’s developer-presenter, read a letter from Terrell Taylor, a construction trades instructor at Maryville High School, describing a change in the project. Rather than building eight outdoor food-pantry boxes, the program will construct eight indoor multipurpose distribution cabinets, one at each school named in the application. The letter said the purpose, budget and student learning objectives remain unchanged and that indoor placement will reduce food spoilage and vandalism while improving inventory control.
"This proposal is stronger than the one they originally submitted," Kate said, describing the switch to indoor cabinets and the addition of hygiene and clothing items that are not covered by social services programs.
Commissioners discussed liability and monitoring concerns and agreed the indoor approach mitigates those issues. The commission then moved and seconded a motion to accept the revised application as presented; the motion was approved.
The commission’s packet stated the revision would be completed within the originally approved budget and that the grant continues to serve as a hands-on workforce-development opportunity for construction-trades students. The commission did not change the previously approved award amount for years prior to 2027 when asked.
Next steps: staff will document the scope change in grant records and confirm any required reporting or installation timelines with the Maryville school representatives.
