Zeeland parks commission recommends Carbon Six Construction for Hoogland Park bid

The Zeeland Cemetery-Parks Commission on March 19 recommended that City Council award the Hoogland Park construction contract to Carbon Six Construction after bids opened March 18, the commission's minutes show.

Commission records say six bids were received and list Carbon Six as the low bidder (the minutes record the bid amount as "$1.228K"). The minutes note that Carbon Six is “more of a general contractor” rather than a firm focused specifically on park construction; commissioners discussed that characterization during a brief exchange. The minutes also say Game Time/Sinclair Recreation will install the playground equipment and that its equipment bid was about $50,000 lower than the proposal from Matt Lawton/Midwest Recreation.

Commissioner Sue Lucas moved to recommend awarding the construction contract to Carbon Six; Commissioner Lynette Lam supported the motion. The motion carried unanimously, recorded as “All in favor, motion carried.” Earlier in the meeting, the commission approved the Feb. 19, 2025 meeting minutes on a motion by Commissioner Amy Langeland supported by Commissioner Thom Parker.

Assistant City Manager and Finance Director Kevin Plockmeyer told commissioners the five-year review point for the parks Master Plan is approaching and the commission will need to engage in that update process. The recommendation to award the contract will go to Zeeland City Council for final action at a subsequent council meeting.

The commission adjourned at 5:20 p.m.; its next regular meeting is scheduled for April 9, 2025, at 5:00 p.m.
