Shelby council sets budget timeline, flags equipment replacements, seasonal hires and trail timing

The Shelby City Council unanimously approved the Jan. 22 budget work session agenda after a motion by Council member Pat Honeywell and a second by Council member Todd Frank.
Council members spent the session reviewing department budget needs: a tractor and mower identified for replacement and requests from department heads to hire two seasonal employees for summer work. Members also discussed the Trail Extension project and whether the city should wait another year to seek grants or break the project into stages, but no firm decision was made.
The council reviewed questions submitted by the Town Hall committee; Council member Jackie Hursey agreed to finish answering and typing the committee’s questions and to make them available to the public when complete.
Council members set a follow-up budget discussion for Feb. 6 and said they hope to finalize numbers by the end of February. The city’s deadline to submit the budget to the state is April 30, 2024. The meeting adjourned at 10:05 a.m.
Next steps: staff will supply cost estimates and finalized answers to Town Hall committee questions ahead of the Feb. 6 follow-up meeting.
