The Shelby City Council on Feb. 6 set a public hearing for Tuesday, March 5, 2024, at 7:00 p.m. on a voluntary annexation request from UR Energy, which introduced its owners at the meeting and said it plans to purchase land from Tom Rau for a data center that performs bitcoin calculations.
Shalimar Mazetis introduced the UR Energy owners and said annexation would benefit both the owner and the city. On motion by Pat Honeywell, seconded by Todd Frank, the council passed Resolution 2-24 to set the hearing; the legal description of the parcel in Pottawattamie County was read into the record and the roll call vote was recorded as all ayes.
Separately, Rachel Hamilton and Terry McCarthy announced that Marne Elkhorn will bury fiber in Shelby this summer; residents will be notified in the spring and the company said it will need land in town for a central office, with the exact property to be selected and discussed at a future meeting.
What was decided: The council formally scheduled the annexation public hearing for March 5 and recorded the parcel’s legal description. What’s next: the annexation request will be heard at the March 5 public hearing where residents and stakeholders may comment before the council takes further action.
Public-safety note: Deputy Jake Hoss gave a brief theft update and urged citizens to report incidents, and a resident’s nuisance-abatement parking concern at 701 Center was discussed and the council agreed the side-street driveway was a better place to park the oversized vehicle.
