School committee reappoints leaders, assigns subcommittees and approves minutes

At its annual reorganization meeting the Berkshire Hills Regional School Committee elected Steve Bennon chair, filled vice‑chair and secretary roles, assigned members to standing subcommittees and approved minutes for May 2 and Oct. 10, 2024 (one abstention).
Steve Bennon was elected chair of the Berkshire Hills Regional School Committee in the meeting’s annual reorganization, winning a unanimous roll‑call vote after being the sole nominee. Bennon told colleagues the role means a great deal: “If my math is correct … this is my 25th year as chair,” he said.
The committee also named Rich Deone vice chair and reappointed Diane Singer as secretary after formal nominations and roll‑call votes. The assistant treasurer vacancy created when Corey stepped off the committee was handled through nomination and vote during the reorganization portion of the meeting.
Members then reviewed and populated standing subcommittees. The Negotiation Subcommittee — which handles district labor and union contract negotiations when contracts are active — will include Bennon, Sarah and Jason for the coming cycle. The Policy Subcommittee will vet proposed new policies and revisions before they reach the full committee; the warrant, buildings & grounds, finance, vocational advisory and superintendent‑evaluation advisory subcommittees were described and members invited to volunteer to fill vacancies created by recent departures.
A motion by Bill Fields, seconded by Jason, to approve the minutes of May 2, 2024 and Oct. 10, 2024 carried by roll call with all present voting yes except Andy Potter, who abstained. The superintendent and staff will follow up on outstanding vacancies and provide a finalized subcommittee roster.
The committee adjourned after administrative reports began.
