Berkshire Hills school leaders approved a Chromebook user agreement that spells out expectations and financial responsibility for district-issued Chromebooks for students in grades 7–12.
Under the policy, families are responsible for up to $275 for a lost or destroyed district-owned Chromebook unless they purchase an optional annual protection plan for $25 that covers accidents, fire, flood, theft and vandalism by others. District staff said they located a $25-per-year insurance policy that would relieve families of the $275 replacement charge if purchased.
The policy clarifies that families experiencing financial hardship may contact the school principal for accommodations so the protection plan remains accessible. Committee discussion asked whether the plan would increase technology department costs; staff responded that the protection plan should reduce budget pressure because it raises the expectation of responsibility and shifts repair/replacement costs to the plan.
The committee voted to approve the Chromebook user agreement and protection plan.
