School Committee tables proposed subcommittee reorganization after equity concerns; motion passes 5–4

The Malden School Committee voted 5–4 on Jan. 12 to table a proposal to change subcommittee structures and titles after debate over whether equity work would be preserved.
Vice Chair and proposal lead Ms. Spadafora described a plan to rename Budget to Finance, to clarify the scope of Policy and Procedure and to create a Teaching and Learning subcommittee focused on academics and instruction. She said subcommittee scopes had drifted from their original intent and that the changes were meant to align titles with functions.
Several members pushed back. Ms. Rose-Zeiberg asked whether “procedures” meant School Committee procedures rather than administrative procedures and questioned dissolving Equity and Opportunity as a standalone group. Ms. Macklin said she could not serve on the Sick Bank Committee and emphasized that equity and services for vulnerable learners should remain distinct focuses. Mr. Drummey moved to table the assignment proposal; Ms. Rose-Zeiberg seconded. The roll-call vote was 5 in favor of tabling and 4 opposed (Yes: Drummey, McCarthy, Macklin, Piazza, Rose-Zeiberg; No: Spadafora, Hortie, Bernard, Mayor Christenson). The motion passed, postponing final action and prompting further discussion at a later date.
What’s next: By tabling the proposal, the Committee left the current subcommittee structure in place and signaled that further discussion will be required before any changes are adopted.
