The Malden School Committee unanimously approved a one‑year extension of the district’s special‑education transportation contract with NRT on Feb. 2, extending the company’s initial three‑year term into one of two optional one‑year renewals.
Ms. Spadafora, who brought the item forward, said transportation costs have risen because more students require individual transport, collaborative program locations have changed and additional routes are needed. She also noted that complaint levels have declined "due to closer oversight" and that route review could yield further cost efficiencies.
Mr. Bernard seconded the motion; a roll‑call vote recorded every committee member as voting yes. The motion passed unanimously.
The extension leaves open the district’s second optional renewal year and does not prescribe rate or service changes; committee members said closer route oversight and review might reduce costs in the future. The meeting record does not show negotiated dollar changes, contract length beyond the single year extension, or amended service terms.
