Interim finance director says payroll errors were human error; FY24 reporting still pending

Interim Director of Finance & Operations Daniel Deedy told the Berlin-Boylston Regional School Committee on Sept. 10 that work remains on the FY24 budget report and that until that work is complete the district cannot finalize end-of-year reports or process its Excess & Deficiency calculation, which is not due until the end of November.
Deedy said some FY25 general-fund lines were not encumbered and that there is urgency to resolve payroll problems. "At the end of the day it's about the students and staff," he said, and described the period as an opportunity to reset the business office.
Interim Superintendent Albert Ganem apologized to staff for the payroll mistakes, called them a human error and training issue, and said administration is working to rectify the problems. Ganem said he had arranged MASC training for Oct. 22 and planned a committee book study of Spirit Work.
In other business, the committee accepted a donation from resident Serge Botsaris of an Ariens WAW 34 walk-behind zero-turn lawn mower, valued at $1,599, for Boylston Elementary; the donation was approved 6–0.
