Berlin-Boylston panel appoints Al Ganem as interim superintendent after candidate interviews

The Berlin-Boylston Regional School Committee voted 5–1 on Aug. 6 to appoint Al Ganem as interim superintendent, choosing him over another candidate after interviews at Tahanto Regional Middle/High School.

The decision followed public interviews with Ganem and Michael Wood, the district's Interim Director of Finance & Operations. The committee said it will continue a full search for a permanent superintendent even as Ganem begins work on a short-term transition plan. The committee scheduled a meeting with Ganem on Thursday to discuss contract terms.

During his interview, Ganem described more than 30 years in education, said he had served previously as a superintendent and outlined immediate priorities if appointed. He emphasized curricular vetting and transparency with families, saying parents "should have the right to opt out," and said his early steps would include meeting the administrative team, coordinating with facilities and engaging community stakeholders. He described a six-month focus on the district's school improvement plan and community outreach.

Wood, who has served as a superintendent for 22 years and is serving in the district's finance operations role, framed the interim position as "a bridge" to the next permanent leader. He said communication with families is essential and endorsed frequent updates to parents, specifically recommending "weekly emails to parents about upcoming materials and curriculum." He told the committee his 90-day goals would focus on relationship-building with the committee and town leaders and ensuring supports are in place for students.

Committee members said both candidates brought strengths: Ganem for fresh perspective and community engagement, and Wood for prior experience in the district and continuity. After discussion, a motion to appoint Ganem was made by Mr. Michael Totman and seconded by Mrs. Lisa Mair. Roll-call votes: Mair — aye; Totman — aye; Lee — nay; Hart — aye; Deglialberti — aye; Grill — aye. The motion passed 5–1.

The committee also confirmed it will conduct a full search for a permanent superintendent while Ganem serves in the interim role. A separate vote on appointing a Director of Finance and Operations was postponed earlier in the meeting so the incoming interim superintendent could have input on that hire. The committee said the Thursday meeting with Ganem will cover a proposed interim contract.

The committee adjourned at 6:25 p.m.
