The Berlin-Boylston Regional School Committee on Aug. 1 announced that Superintendent Carol L. Costello is retiring and moved into executive session to consider candidates for an interim superintendent.
Chair Meagan Grill told the committee she was announcing Costello’s retirement and read an appreciative statement about Costello’s work in the district, wishing her well in retirement. Grill said the committee plans to undertake a formal search for a permanent superintendent during the upcoming school year and will select and discuss interim candidates in executive session, with the interim possibly lasting the entire school year.
Committee member Jessica Deglialberti said the group had received information from NESDEC related to superintendent searches. The committee invoked the executive-session exception identified in the meeting materials as number "8," which the chair cited as permitting preliminary screening and interviews of applicants when an open meeting would be detrimental to obtaining qualified applicants. The materials noted that the exception does not apply to meetings of a preliminary screening committee that are only considering applicants who passed a prior screening.
A motion to exit open session and enter executive session, without returning to open session that night, was made by Mrs. Julie Lee and seconded by Mrs. Lori-Anne Hart. The clerk recorded a roll-call vote with Mrs. Lori-Anne Hart, Mrs. Lisa Mair, Mr. Michael Totman, Mrs. Julie Lee, Mrs. Jessica Deglialberti and Mrs. Meagan Grill voting aye; the motion passed and the committee entered executive session at 5:25 p.m.
The meeting materials listed the executive-session purpose as "to discuss strategy with respect to the preliminary screening of candidates for interim superintendent." The committee announced its next regular meeting for Aug. 27, 2024.
