Dodge County to require most employees to enter courthouse through east doors, board hears

Sheriff Weitzel recommended changes to courthouse entry and parking at the Dodge County Board of Supervisors meeting on Jan. 7, proposing that all courthouse employees enter through the east doors where security will be stationed and that the north doors be closed to the public and employees and designated as emergency exits only.
Under the proposal, courthouse employees and public defense attorneys who carry badges would be permitted to bypass the security scanner at the east entrance. Judges would be exempt from the requirement and may use any entrance. The Board directed Sheriff Weitzel to draft a message for department heads and to work with County Attorney Hopkins on wording for an addendum to the employee handbook; that handbook language will be considered at the Board’s Jan. 21 meeting.
Sheriff Weitzel also raised parking changes intended to free street parking on 4th and 5th Streets for courthouse patrons; Supervisor Tawney said he would speak with Street Superintendent Cari Hoffart to request improved snow removal in the parking lot east of the courthouse so spaces remain available for visitors. The recommendations were presented as committee recommendations; the Board did not adopt a final policy at the Jan. 7 meeting and will review handbook language at the next meeting.
