Mass Cultural Council told Senate recommends just over $26M for FY26

At the May 15 Advancement Committee meeting, Senior Director of Public Affairs Bethann Steiner briefed members on upcoming events and the agency’s FY26 budget posture.
Steiner said the agency requested $28 million for FY26 but that the Senate Ways and Means Committee had recommended just over $26 million — which she described as the highest operating budget in Mass Cultural Council history. She called the recommendation an encouraging sign amid broader fiscal uncertainty on Beacon Hill and said staff will publish detailed funding reports by county and legislator before the end of June to support advocacy efforts.
Steiner also announced two grant celebrations: a Grants for Creative Individuals reception at the State House on May 19 and a Cultural Facilities Fund event at ZUMIX on June 27. She said the agency is coordinating with partners including the New England Foundation for the Arts, MassCreative and national organizations to align on federal developments and encourage grantees to document losses in case relief funding becomes available.
Steiner said staff plan to share county- and legislator-level funding reports publicly as part of the agency’s transparency practice; the Committee did not take a formal vote on budget requests during the session.
