Malden council approves early-retirement health benefit extension; city budget still pending

At its May 29 special session, the Malden City Council approved an early-retirement incentive for Municipal Court Clerk Debbie Brown that extends city-paid health insurance until she reaches age 65 in June 2026.
Mayor Denton Kooyman relayed Brown’s request to the council, saying she has served the city for 30 years and meets the city's retirement policy requirements except for the health-insurance age provision. Council Member Jenkins moved to approve the requested health benefit extension and Council Member Beckett seconded. The council approved the motion by poll vote, five yes, zero no.
Members then discussed other business, including the status of the Board of Public Works (BPW) budget. City Administrator/Utility Director Ivone Smith said the BPW budget presented May 27 was not approved and that BPW will need a special called meeting to adopt it. Smith reminded councilors that while the city budget does not have to be finalized at the June 16 meeting, it must be approved by the end of the month; she said a special called City Council meeting may be required to meet that deadline.
The council adjourned at 2:33 p.m. after approving the actions on the agenda. The meeting record was attested by City Clerk Mandy Lewis.
