Malden council approves BHMG study to assess aging electrical substations

The Malden City Council on June 16 approved a BHMG proposal to perform strategic planning for the city's aging electric substations.
City Administrator/Utility Director Ivone Smith told the council that substations are more than 30 years old and a local business on the Air Base is considering expansion; the study will assess existing load capacity and whether the city needs a new substation or can expand existing infrastructure. "With a business on the Air Base wanting to expand in the next few years, the city would benefit from the evaluation," Smith said.
Council Member Coleman opposed the expenditure, saying the need is already known; however, a majority voted to proceed. Council Member Downs moved to approve the BHMG quote; Council Member Jenkins seconded. The motion passed on a 7–1 vote. The study will inform whether the city should plan for a new substation or make targeted upgrades.
Staff did not provide a final contract value during the meeting; further procurement steps and timelines were delegated to the utility department and Board of Public Works.
