Board addresses personnel matters: retirement payout, vacancy review and shared-staff recruitment

The Lyon County Board of Supervisors addressed several personnel matters at its May 26 meeting. The Board approved the retirement payout for Arden Kopischke at the maximum accrual—240 vacation hours and 20 personal hours—on a motion by Altena, seconded by Scholten; the motion carried.
Auditor Sprock presented the current job description for the vacant Safety Director position. The Board asked Sprock to determine whether there are any specific statutory or certification requirements for the post and deferred additional decisions about wages and next steps to the next board meeting.
The Board also heard from County Engineer Daryl Albertson and County Attorney Nolan McGowan, who proposed advertising for a shared employee to fill part-time vacancies in their offices with the intent to convert the hire to full-time. The Board authorized advertisement on a motion by Vanden Bosch, seconded by Birkey; motion carried.
Separately, the minutes record two personnel actions: a step increase for full-time jailer Jarod Kannegieter to $30.56 per hour effective June 1, 2026, and the rehiring of Jeff Katt as a seasonal secondary roads employee starting May 11, 2026, at $18.00 per hour.
