Stamford board approves plans to bid auditorium roof replacement at Newfield Elementary

Chair Haiden moved to approve Resolution 01-14-25:01, which asks the board to certify review of final plans and project manuals for State Project No. 135-0284 dated 11/07/2024; the motion was seconded and passed by voice/hand vote with all members in favor.
Presenter Catherine Labobo told the board the work covers about 7,000 square feet and targets a failing section of roof that has exceeded its useful life. "It's a small roof over the auditorium that has come up on the end of its life," Labobo said, noting the district submitted a roughly 140-page bid package to state reviewers.
Labobo said the project budget is $350,000 and the district expects about 60% reimbursement from the state — roughly $210,000. She described the planned cover as EPDM, a rubberized roofing product warrantied for 20 years and commonly eligible for state reimbursement; the bid includes an option for an additional 10-year warranty if costs allow. "So we're going to see if we can do that within our $350,000 total project budget," Labobo said.
Dr. Hammond, who said he had recently visited the site, voiced support for the work and noted its importance to teachers in that wing. Board members asked clarifying questions about the standard reimbursement rate and the expected warranty life; Labobo said the district has been successful in getting close to the full 60% and that while longer-life roofing could be pursued, the state would reimburse only for the 20-year portion.
After the vote, Chair Haiden directed Melissa Lovall to proceed with the project to keep it on schedule for the summer. No amendments or opposing votes were recorded during the meeting.
The special meeting was then adjourned; the chair noted a separate TLC meeting would follow, where a master staffing plan by Amy Baldotti and staff would be discussed.
