The instructional materials policy (IJ) was amended to remove language that would have prevented reconsideration for a set number of years; the committee then approved the revised policy by roll call. Administrators said the change clarified the district's ability to respond to legitimate concerns without unduly restricting review rights.
A lengthy debate followed on KEC, the proposed policy for requesting reconsideration of curricular and library materials. Key points included whether the standing materials review committee should include non-educators and whether parents or students should be voting members. Several committee members argued for keeping decision-making primarily in the hands of professional educators; others favored some community representation.
After multiple amendments and discussion of best practices (including references to ALA guidance presented by librarians), the committee adopted an amendment that allows the principal to appoint a parent, a school committee member and a student, "if age appropriate," to serve as non‑voting members of the materials review committee. Committee members also discussed safeguards for serial complainants and expressed interest in legal counsel guidance if serial challenges arise.
A district official said the standing materials review committee will be constituted prior to the arrival of any complaint so that it is a pre‑existing body rather than something created ad hoc. The committee approved the policy language as amended by roll call.
