Superintendent previews 2026–27 goals, proposes studies on screen time and achievement disparities

At the May meeting the superintendent previewed his proposed annual plan and asked for committee feedback before presenting a formal plan at the May 27 meeting. He said the plan will include five goals: a student learning goal, a professional practice goal and three district improvement priorities focused on inclusive co-teaching practices, addressing long-standing facilities issues and expanding deeper-learning experiences.
For professional practice the superintendent proposed two study topics: district screen time and Chromebook use (looking at perceptions among students, staff and families) and an examination of potential disparities in achievement between boys and girls. He described plans to measure student belonging across the three schools using quantitative and qualitative measures.
Committee members supported the general approach but recommended widening any equity analysis beyond gender to include socioeconomic status, attendance patterns and students with disabilities. Dr. Sue Miller and Committee member Chris Pino raised calibration and assessment consistency as possible action steps to reduce disparities. The superintendent said he will refine the goals into formal benchmarks and action steps for the next meeting.
