Superintendent highlights Forestdale garden funded by $30,000 grant and outlines school-choice openings

At the May meeting the superintendent highlighted recent district celebrations and community partnerships, including a dedication ceremony for the Forestdale school garden that was funded in part by a $30,000 legislative grant awarded through the Fund for Sandwich.
The superintendent described the garden’s features — 32 raised beds (one per classroom), irrigation, electrical service, birdhouses, two small ponds and a sensory path — and thanked advisory-board partners and Senator Dylan Fernandez for support. "It really is a $30,000 grant from Senator Dylan Fernandez," the superintendent said, noting the grant was routed through the Fund for Sandwich.
The superintendent and the student representative also recapped a Walk/Ride/Roll to School Day: roughly 104 Forestdale participants and additional Oak Ridge participation; the events were supported by Sandwich police, fire and Recreation Department staff. The superintendent credited Trish McDonald from the recreation department for coordinating the events.
On enrollment matters, the superintendent announced anticipated school-choice openings for next year: Forestdale — six openings in grade 2 and none in kindergarten or grade 1; Oakwood — two openings in grade 4 and six in grade 5; Sandwich Middle/High School — ten openings per grade for grades 7–11 and none for grade 12. If applications exceed openings, the committee set a lottery for June 16 at 10:00 a.m. via Zoom.
