Mass Cultural Council approves FY25 grants package, authorizes Poet Laureate honorarium

At its online meeting, the Council voted to adopt the Programs Committee’s recommendations — approving Gaming Mitigation Fund grants, the final list of Operating Grants for Organizations, and Grants for Creative Individuals, which staff recommended as 447 awards of $5,000 each. The Council also authorized up to $15,000 to be provided to the Massachusetts Poet Laureate, to be funded from returned or reallocated grant dollars or the Council’s general appropriation as needed.
Why it matters: the approvals finalize the Agency’s FY25 grantmaking and direct resources to artists and cultural organizations across the Commonwealth as the agency moves into FY26 planning and program launch phases.
Programs Committee Chair Cecil Barron Jensen presented the Committee’s endorsement. Mark Snyder moved to approve the recommendations; Diane Asadorian Masters seconded. The motion passed by roll-call vote with a set of members noted as absent for the vote (Iván Espinoza-Madrigal, Yvonne Hao, David Kong, Emily Bramhall, and Donna Haghighat) and with several members declaring abstentions or recusals on grants related to organizations with which they had affiliations. The meeting minutes list those members and the specific organizations for which they abstained.
Council members and staff framed the vote as the conclusion of FY25 grantmaking. Senior Director of Program Operations Jen Lawless told members that Cultural Facilities Fund awards are expected to be announced in May, the Operating Grants application for FY26 has opened, and the new Creative Experiences Program will launch next week offering project grants at $2,500 or $5,000.
