Mt. Vernon council discusses potential sale of 10 acres on Zachery Drive to South Central Transit

In an executive session on Sept. 3, the Mt. Vernon City Council discussed a possible sale of 10 acres of city property on Zachery Drive to South Central Transit.
City Manager Mary Ellen Bechtel said the city is in the process of purchasing the Zachery Drive property and that South Central Transit recently expressed interest in buying 10 acres on the north side to consolidate its professional offices, a fleet management barn and to build a transfer station where buses could transfer riders. Bechtel said the city would need to subdivide the parcel to complete such a sale.
Bechtel told the council that the proposed use is public transportation and emphasized its importance for residents. Council members indicated agreement that Bechtel should continue communication with South Central Transit, obtain a site plan and return with price recommendations after city expenses are accounted for. No final sale price or formal vote was recorded during the session.
The discussion took place in executive session under statutory citations given by the mayor for sale and lease of real property; the council did not take a public vote on the matter during the meeting. The council adjourned the executive session at 8:24 p.m.
