Wymore moves forward on Gambles Building demolition; state funding delayed until separate account is opened

The Wymore City Council heard an update July 3 on plans to demolish the dilapidated Gambles Building at 207 South 7th Street. City Attorney Andy Carothers said the city has submitted required paperwork to the state but must open a separate bank account because the state will not release demolition funds if they are co-mingled with other municipal funds.
Carothers said the building’s owner has until Sept. 30 to vacate. He also said an asbestos inspector must be allowed access between Sept. 1 and Sept. 15 so required testing can occur, and contractor Tiemann’s will need access to estimate cleanup costs. Carothers added that he has been unable to reach the owner of the Gambles Building and that he also needs to contact the owner of 518 N. 11th about a separate property issue.
Tim Sedlacek reported that he has issued nine nuisance notices citywide; five properties have complied, one property will wait for the tire-amnesty program and the city will mow two properties. Staff and the city attorney will follow up on owner outreach, the separate bank account setup and scheduling contractor access for inspection and cost estimates. No demolition date was set at the July 3 meeting.
Next steps: the city attorney will continue owner outreach and establish the separate account required by the state before funds will be released. An asbestos inspection and contractor estimate are expected during the September inspection window.
