At the May 15 meeting, a representative of the Beatrice Humane Society outlined a plan for a one-day Trap-Vaccinate-Neuter (TNR) clinic aimed at reducing the community’s feral and unowned cat population. The representative said the society could trap 100 to 200 cats in a single-day clinic at an estimated cost of $5,000 to $7,000 and that achieving roughly 80% sterilization would allow the population to be brought under control in about eight years.
Council members voiced support for providing a city letter endorsing the program. City Attorney Andy Carothers said he would meet with the Humane Society board to negotiate an agreement and prepare the requested letter of support.
No formal motion was recorded in the minutes; the record notes council members were in favor and that the city attorney will follow up on the agreement and letter. The item will return to staff and the Humane Society for further steps, including any logistical or budgetary details required to host the clinic.
